The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations
1998 (PUWER 98) requires the duty holder, or a competent individual/organisation
working on their behalf, to assess the risks to health and safety
of any work equipment used within their undertaking. The risk assessment,
which should take account of the type of work equipment, is aimed
at identifying any electrical or mechanical hazards to which people
may be exposed.
These Guidelines have been produced to assist the Duty Holder, or
a competent individual/organisation working on their behalf, in
the assessment of the risks to health and safety of work equipment
in relation to electrical issues in order to help ensure that the
work equipment is in compliance with PUWER 98.

The Quarries Regulations 1999 require the
operator of a quarry to have a suitable written scheme detailing
the frequency and extent of inspections required of all plant used
in the quarry. The Procedures and information detailed within these
Guidelines represent what is regarded to be good practice and a
model to be used when designing periodic examination and testing
schemes which form part of the duties placed on employers to properly
design, install, maintain and use electrical equipment within quarries.
