First Representative from UK Appointed to European Safety Board

Richard Morgan, the Technical Director of the Safety Assessment Federation (SAFed) has been appointed as the UK's first representative on the board of CEOC, the European umbrella organisation of independent bodies in the field of testing, technical inspection, certification of products and Quality Management Systems and risk management.

Richard, who recently took up the position as Technical Director of SAFed, commented. "I am delighted to be part of the European team promoting safety through independent inspection in Europe. It is vital that the interests of a thriving independent inspection industry in the UK are represented in Europe, especially as the barriers to cross boundary working are removed."

Created in Switzerland in 1961, CEOC is comprised of 27 Member Organisations from 20 European States. The total number of employees of these member organisations is approximately 50,000. Its members are recognised/authorised by the public regulatory authorities to provide inspection and other conformity assessment services for a large variety of equipment. Such equipment includes boilers, pressure vessels, lifts, machines, cranes, medical equipment, electrical and heating installations, industrial plants, nuclear power stations and buildings. Most members are Notified Bodies within the framework of the EU New Approach Directives and their collective experience and opinions contribute to effective implementation of European Directives.

Richard continued. "A number of CEOC guidelines and recommendations have already been published to facilitate the mutual recognition of testing and inspection results between member states. Both SAFed and CEOC are uniquely placed between government and industry to ensure that new legislation is both comprehensive and practicable for industry."
