Safety Assessment Federation (SAFed) Lift Guidelines 1 - Guidelines on the Supplementary Tests on In-Service Lifts

The Safety Assessment Federation (SAFed) is currently revising the Guidelines on the Supplementary Tests on In-Service Lifts to bring the document up to date with current references, legislation and design technology and also follow the HSE guidance on the importance of using a risk assessment approach to thorough examinations.

The new document is being developed in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Local Authorities, lift industry and professionals and lift owners together with a further consultation of wider expert opinion.

The emphasis is moving away from the routine periodic testing towards a process of risk assessment during the thorough examination to justify the requirement for such supplementary tests.

In general the tests should not be considered as part of the routine servicing and maintenance regime but as part of the supporting evidence for the statutory thorough examination to ensure the lift remains safe to use.

The revised document is planned for publication towards the end of 2005 and until then the current edition remains extant. However, as the document is in revision, there will be a discounted offer on the current edition with a further offer to purchase the revised document at beneficial rates.
