New Chief Executive for SAFed

The Safety Assessment Federation (SAFed) has produced Guidelines for the Periodic Testing and Examination of Fixed Low Voltage Electrical Installations at Quarries, in response to the new Quarries Regulations 1999, which came into force on the 1st January 2000.

Established in 1995, SAFed is the lead trade body for the independent engineering inspection industry, which plays a crucial role in maintaining high standards of safety in the workplace.

Hulmes has gained a wide range of appropriate experience, which puts him in a strong position to face the challenges that lie ahead. He served for over 20 years in the British Army, holding a number of key project management, safety engineering and strategic positions, both in the UK and internationally.

During this time Colonel Hulmes became a Chartered Engineer and was awarded European Engineer status, before moving into safety design roles within NATO. Shortly before his retirement from the Army, Colonel Hulmes attained a Law degree and became a legislative policy advisor to both the MOD and the Cabinet Office.

As both Chief Executive and Technical Director, Hulmes will oversee SAFed's numerous Technical Committees and be responsible for developing the strategic development consultative side of the federation. Hulmes will continue the close working relationship SAFed has enjoyed with the HSE and UKAS , and will also act as the UK's representative to CEOC where his fluency in German and knowledge of French will be an asset.

Ian Currie, Chairman of SAFed commented. "Richard will be bringing a comprehensive range of experience and skills to SAFed. I am delighted that he will be continuing the substantial work that his predecessor started, which established SAFed as the recognised and respected authority in the safety arena that it is today. I'm sure he will be a marvellous asset to the Federation".

Hulmes replied. "I am looking forward to representing the independent engineering inspection industry and to working with the DTI, HSE, UKAS, BSI and other trade bodies and European Committees to improve work place safety and the status of the independent inspection industry. My previous experience working in national and international standardisation of safety projects will allow me to direct the SAFed strategy and hopefully inject some new ideas and methods to develop best practice in the industry."
